Fish Oils – Health Enhancer or Harmful Source of Toxins?
Recent scientific studies have shown that fatty acids, found in fish and fish oil, can improve memory, concentration and behaviour as well as reduce the risk of a stroke, prevent severe mental and neurological disorders and even certain cancers.
However, eating large amounts of fish or fish oils to provide the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids could, in fact, be doing more harm than good. It has been well documented that eating large amounts of fish can cause mercury poisoning, often resulting in hair loss, depression, difficulty concentrating, headaches and fatigue. Yet, some fish oil supplements can also carry a risk of toxicity.
Professor Basant Puri, world-leading authority on natural fatty acids and Consultant at Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College London, explains;
"Some fish oil is rich in vitamin A and consuming large amounts of it to obtain the necessary levels of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) may cause vitamin A toxicity. Fish oil can also be extracted from the liver which contains concentrated amounts of potentially harmful pollutants, so it is important to choose a fish oil containing EPA which has been taken from the flesh of the fish and is free from vitamin A."
For reasons of cost-effectiveness, fish oil is often derived from larger species, such as swordfish, shark, mackerel and tuna. These fish eat other fish thereby accumulating a greater concentration of pollutants including mercury.
OmegaForce, from Igennus, pioneering manufacturers of omega supplements, is the first fish oil supplement to provide the body with the optimum combination of omega-3, 6 and 9 acids to maintain and improve general health and well-being, without any risk of toxicity. The EPA in OmegaForce is taken from the flesh of the fish so is free of vitamin A and OmegaForce is also taken from anchovies, small, short-lived fish which contain lower levels of impurities.
Using a precise formulation of long-chain fatty acids, OmegaForce combines the health-enhancing properties of ultra pure EPA (omega-3), cold-pressed organic virgin evening primrose oil, CLA (conjugated linoleic acid - omega-6) extracted from safflowers and cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil(containing oleic acid - omega-9), providing the safest way to obtain all the essential omega fatty acids.
Due to the deficiency in most diets of the vital vitamins required for the optimum absorption of omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids (such as EPA and CLA) as contained in OmegaForce, it is recommended that VegeCO is taken in conjunction with OmegaForce to maximise its effectiveness.
VegeCO, is a new vitamin and mineral food supplement designed specifically to provide sufficient levels of biotin, folic acid, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C, zinc, magnesium and selenium to enhance the benefits of taking a fatty acid supplement. These vitamins and minerals ensure that enzymes and enzyme-mediated conversions occur properly in the body, helping to improve cardiovascular health, alleviate rheumatoid arthritis, balance mood, improve concentration, attention and coordination as well as enhancing brain and organ function.
Since early 2000, Professor Puri has been using omega-3 and omega-6 natural fatty acids to treat patients with a range of brain disorders including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression and chronic fatigue syndrome (also known as ME), schizophrenia and Huntington’s chorea, with extremely positive results.
