Crab fishermen demand meeting with minister

July 18, 2005

SYDNEY, N.S. - Snow crab fishermen upset with recent changes to their fishery want a meeting with the federal minister right away.

They say a planned sit down with Geoff Regan next week is too far away.

They also want the minister to shut down the fishery in their region until the dispute is resolved.

Regan agreed to meet with the fishermen July 27, providing they don't stage more protests like one in June that halted ferry traffic between Cape Breton and Newfoundland.

The fishermen say that's too far away and there's too much frustration to let things rest.

The fishermen are upset over recent changes in their region that included a 20-per-cent reduction in their total allowable catch and the removal of some boundary lines.
