Pass on sea bass
Pirate fishing fleets that disregard fishing limits are illegally catching this fish from Antarctica. Unless people stop eating Chilean sea bass, it may be commercially extinct within five years. So remember, however deliciously you prepare it, pirates probably poached it first.

The Australian government has unveiled the latest weapon in its battle against poachers who haunt its Antarctic fishing grounds catching Patagonian toothfish (known to us as Chilean seabass). This weapon is a high-speed patrol boat equipped with twin .50 calibre machine guns. The best way to save this fish is for people not to eat it, and then it wouldn't be worth it for the poachers to risk the dangers of catching it, but if people continue eating it, then these machine guns might help the fish. The mighty American NET (National Environmental Trust) has lots of information on Chilean sea bass, including a rather silly animated cartoon (optional): Click here

A story by National Geographic tells about American chefs that are trying to save Chilean sea bass by not serving it their restaurants, and a contrary view from a president of a fish and seafood trade association: Click here
